I think that the contrary question could be asked. Does Vision based SLAM makes LIDAR obsolete ?
There have been great achievements in computer vision, especially in depth estimation. the cooperation between deep learning and computer vision made it possible to ask such a contrary question.
Elon musk argued that LIDAR is such a redundant expensive sensor[1] . Tesla cars rely on computer vision and deep learning algorithms deeply on their autopilot mission.
“Lidar is a fool’s errand,” Elon Musk said. “Anyone relying on lidar is doomed. Doomed! [They are] expensive sensors that are unnecessary. It’s like having a whole bunch of expensive appendices. Like, one appendix is bad, well now you have a whole bunch of them, it’s ridiculous, you’ll see.”
